SSI Open Water Diver Course (OWD)
Let’s face it, this is why most of you head to Koh Tao, Turtle Island, in the first place – to learn to dive and experience the wonders of a whole new world. If you want to learn how and discover what wonders lie below the surface of the oceans, which cover almost three-quarters of the planet, then this is the scuba diving course for you! In just 3 ½ days, you can become a certified SSI Open Water Diver, the real adventures can then begin and you can embark on what we hope will be a life-long love affair with diving that will take you around the world.
The first day of the course is the half-day when you check in, meet the international Alvaro Diving team who are from 5 different countries and speak 6 languages, get to know your fully-qualified, multilingual SSI instructor and receive your SSI Open Water Book; this book provides the basis for the theory part of the course and is an all-encompassing guide to the first stage of open water diving. Everything you need to know is in this book and you can refer to it throughout the course to back up the knowledge you will receive from your instructor. Your instructor will show you as well what you have to prepare for the next morning, some reading and/or watching a video.
On the first Full Day, at 9am, you will meet up with your instructor and get to know the other members of your dive group – the group will never be more than 5 people to ensure you have personal, comprehensive teaching time with your chosen instructor. We will study some dive theory together, have a look at the dive equipment (so you can find out what all those hoses, valves and buttons really do!) and find out how you look in a wetsuit, fins and mask! After lunch we will take you to a shallow bay where you will practice the first skills (confined session) in water shallow enough to stand, sharing your “classroom” with schools of fish and beautiful corals. We believe that taking you out into the sea, rather than in a featureless swimming pool with nothing to see, means you will have more fun, which is what diving is all about and get a real taste of what really lies in store for you in your new underwater world.
On the second Full Day we will again meet at 9am to take you through another theory session. In these theory sessions you will learn a lot more about diving and acquire all the knowledge you need to stay safe underwater and be a responsible diver for your fellow submariners and the underwater environment you are a visitor in. After lunch, your instructor will take you for 2 dives on a beautiful reef around the island (not deeper than 12m); during these dives your instructor will again show you the exercises and skills you learned from the confined session and then you will be required to repeat them correctly. These are the basic skills you need to give you confidence in the water and to demonstrate to you that there is no situation that may arise while you are under the water that you cannot deal with calmly and safely; these include tasks such as clearing your mask of water, recovering your regulator should it be accidentally knocked out of your mouth and breathing from your dive buddy’s octopus, who is with you at all times, should the situation ever call for it; oh and, don’t worry, there will be plenty of time to have fun and explore the underwater world too!
On the third Full Day we will take you out on the morning boat (at 10:30am) for 2 more dives at some of Koh Tao’s most impressive dive sites, where we will take you down to a maximum depth of 18m. To make sure you’re on your way to becoming a skilled and safe diver, you’ll practice a few more skills before going off to explore the amazing underwater scenery. Back in the dive shop you will do a quick test on the theory and then you’ve earned your first SSI license!
